Phenotype Homozygous State Decreased susceptibility to viral infection: viral replication was inhibited in mice from resistant strains upon innoculation with the following viruses: Yellow Fever, Dengue Fever, West Nile Fever, Japanese Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis, Russian Spring Summer Encephalities. Flvr Phenotpye:- resistance to infections by Flaviviruses. Tlr4 Phenotpye:- Toll 4 receptor is responsive to LPS infection. Dihthigh Phenotpye:- an increased hypothermia response as measured by a drop in core temperature following peripheral administration of a dopamine agonist.
Phenotype Heterozygous State Flvr Phenotpye:- dominant phenotype, heterozygotes are resistant to infection. Tlr4 Phenotpye:- dominant phenotype, heterzygotes show responsiveness to LPS. Dihthigh Phenotpye:- dominant and dopamine-induced hypothermia in heterozygotes show the high responder phenotype.

Characteristics Assayed For Hypothermia phenotype was performed by taking rectal temperatures following peripheral administration of a dopamine agonist. Protocol can be found in Stoddart et al 2004. Flavivirus susceptibility was measured as mortality and brain virus titres following IC inoculation with a Flavivirus (MVE). See Urosevic et al 1997. Assessment of LPS responsiveness described in Silvia and Urosvic 1999.

Research value of this Strain This strain is particularly valuable for the virological and immunological characterisation of Flavivirus infection. Tis strain is resistant to infections and shows significantly reduced mortality and reduced viral titres following inoculation with the virus. This C3H.PRI-Flvr strain also forms part of a comparative congenic model used to investigate dopamine related phenotypes. The model has been developed using dopamine-induced hypothermia as the phenotypic marker. This strain also exhibits hyper-dopaminergic responses in other phenotypes, such as the startle response and prepulse inhibition of the startle response (models for sensorimotor gating).
